Ozma could be considered to have a “Weezer circa Blue album sound”, but their take on fuzzy guitars, catchy harmonies and geeky lyrics definitely has it's own unique twist. This band seems to be just as obsessed with outer space as they are with killer guitar licks and fantastic synthesizer sounds (Project Ozma was a pioneering SETI experiment started in 1960 by Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake, at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia).
With The Doubble Donkey Disc, Ozma experimented with the traditional Russian balalaika and the flute to create a sound they called “Russian coldfusion”. The disc was split into two imaginary “concept EPs”: the first five songs (including the Russian folk song Korobeiniki, more famously the Tetris theme) revolved around Russian themes, while the second half created a more “dance party” atmosphere.
Despite the catchyness of the music, fans of great guitar work will recognize the complexity in some of the licks on this album. On a lighter side, the lyrics deal with everything from breaking up with girls to dancing and make allusions to geeky things like Zelda and Legoland to get a chuckle out of the attentive listener.
